I get it. You’re unhappy in your job and you want to get out of it as soon as possible. And yes, you’re not wrong. Not everyone is made for the energy-sapping 9-5. I feel it’s my duty to show you an alternative you can take, which might just be the right thing for you.
If you already know me, you probably know what I’m talking about. The alternative I’m presenting to you is to run your own online business.
Two years ago, when I worked at an international logistics company in my hometown, my only option was to start my online business as a side hustle. Why? Because younger me had signed a contract binding me to the company for 2 years. I had to find a way to follow my purpose and passion, while still fulfilling my contract.
You know what? I wouldn’t change a thing. Starting my side hustle while working 9-5 was the best decision I could have made. If I’d waited until I left my job to start my own online business – well, I don’t think I would have had as much success.
But why is that? Here are 4 benefits of starting your own online business next to your full-time job.
1. You can test the water
Starting your own venture next to your 9-5 allows you to see whether running your own online business is the right path to your freedom. I really must say that running your own business is not for everyone: it takes a lot of effort, dedication and time to make it work.
By starting your own online business next to your full-time job, you can check whether you have what it takes to make it in this business world and how passionate you feel about it. Because it’s vital to know that, before you go all in.
2. You eliminate your fears
Starting your own online business comes with a lot of fears, such as losing financial security, or offering something people do not want. However, with a full-time job your finances are secured, giving you time to get to know your target audience. You still get your monthly paycheck, while you spend your spare time figuring out what does and doesn’t work in your business.
Your fear of failing reduces as well, as you don’t put yourself under time pressure, but instead give yourself enough space to grow and evolve your business.
3. You can develop your skills and experience
Your guaranteed income gives you the perfect opportunity to learn and develop new skills after work, which will help you skyrocket your business once you run it full-time.
I mean, it takes some trial and error until you can determine the perfect communication with your clients, brand marketing, pricing, and much more. Once you run your own online business, your spare time will be needed for building your client base, and skill development may have to take a back seat. So take the opportunity to grow your skills while you’re still an employee.
4. You can add to your savings
When you dive into your own online business full-time, I’d suggest having savings to cover your expenses for at least 6 months, to help you through. But maybe right now your job only pays you enough to cover your monthly bills, with no extra to save.
A side-hustle can give you some extra income to save for your big break-out.
Because of these 4 amazing benefits, I would highly recommend starting your own online business as a side hustle. Not only because it helped me a lot in the beginning, but also because it could help you be better prepared when you’re ready to make the leap from employee to entrepreneur.
